Due to its location, the castle had a strategic importance during the Byzantine years, as it ensured the control of the plain of Larissa, the access to the plain of Agia and the road from Kanalia to Volos. The fortification consists of the external enclosure and two transversal internal enclosures. The external enclosure is reinforced with square, round and triangular towers. The Byzantine church of St Georgios, a single-spaced small church with a semi-hexagonal apse in the Sanctuary, a building dated probably to the 12th century, is salvaged from the once Byzantine settlement. |
