It is a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof and a narthex, which was connected to the main church through an opening. It has a semi-circular apse to the east. It was built in the 10th century, incorporating earlier Byzantine sculptures, while it was renovated later and for the last time during the Byzantine period. It preserves parts of wall paintings from the 10th century, as well as older layers.
Special characteristics
Marble statues in the interior of the church (window frames, pilaster capitals). Also, the wall decoration, the oldest Byzantine decoration of Thessaly is important. It testifies to the prosperity of the settlement during the Middle Byzantine period. St Nikolaos, the second church, is from the same period and was renovated in the 16th century. |
